to the Herbarium of Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas del Noroeste, S. C.
Our herbarium, officially founded in
1990, is identified by the acronym HCIB (registered in the Herbarium Index).
It is registered in INE [National Institute of Ecology]
in the Office of the Director General of Wildlife, which is an administrative unit of CITES [Convention
on International Trade in Endangered Species] in México (register BCS FLO 088
020).
Just as any herbarium, our mission is to
systematically gather our representative plant samples to identify floral diversity
of the State of Baja California Sur in
particular, as well as from Baja
California and the Mexican Northwest, in general. Other
objectives derive from this basic one related to spreading this knowledge.
The Herbarium collection currently (2008)
exceeds 20,000 specimens (phanerogams and pteridophites), whose data has been
captured in an accessible data base for reference, with geographic, ecological,
and curatorial information.
The largest part of the collection corresponds
to samples of Baja California Sur, specifically from the regions of the
Biosphere Reserve of the Sierra de La Laguna, Islas del Golfo de California, Sierra de la Giganta, El Vizcaíno, Sierra de
Guadalupe and San Francisco,
and of the southern region of Cabo. We have an exchange program with national
and international institutions that has allowed us to have a certain number
of samples from Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Sonora and Baja California;
from the USA, southern California and Arizona.
Unfortunately we do not have a representative sample from Sinaloa.
